ASSISTED THERAPY WITH DOGS
In general, the dog can be a very useful animal to establish a relationship with a person with a disability. The presence of the animal becomes a common thread for communication with the therapist or educator. A user’s self-esteem can greatly improve if they feel needed, and caring for a dog can make them feel very useful and needed.

Dogs help to put aside the feeling of isolation and loneliness, and act as a social lubricant, developing in the person a sense of diligence and competence in the face of a feeling of inferiority. They also enhance unconditional acceptance, increase the level of trust, and develop a sense of responsibility. Finally, they also increase physical activity.

In relation to people with intellectual disabilities, the areas worked on in therapy with dogs are: sensory stimulation, motor coordination, functional mobility, concentration, memory, communicative interaction, social and affective skills, fine motor skills, relaxation and, in addition, , is a motivational and stimulating resource.
