The Specialization and Territorial Competitiveness Project (PECT) Girona - Sustainable Food System is a project co-financed by the Generalitat (50%), the Girona Provincial Council (25%) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the framework of the ERDF Operational Program for Catalonia 2014-2020.
The aim of this project is to improve the economic, social and environmental sustainability of food production systems along the entire value chain in the province of Girona, through the development of innovative solutions that increase the profitability of activities. related to the production, transformation and distribution of food, to make it possible in this way to affect social and environmental sustainability.
The PECT Girona - Sustainable Food System, proposes innovative solutions to the main challenges of the sector, structured in ten operations and with the participation of 9 partner entities. It is led by the Diputació de Girona, which acts as a representative entity and includes agents from the research and innovation system such as the University of Girona and the Institute for Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA); social agents and local bodies, the Farmers' Union of Catalonia and the Riudellots de la Selva City Council; and private non-profit foundations involved in social, environmental and economic sustainability, the Drissa Foundation, the Ramon Noguera Foundation, the Emys Foundation and the Empordà Designation of Origin Regulatory Council.
This proposal is in line with the territorial and sectorial strategy developing the area of sectorial specialization Sustainable Food Systems set in the RIS3CAT strategy of the Girona region and is consistent with the leading sectoral area of the RIS3CAT "Food industry" . It has as a territorial scope the whole of the demarcation of Girona and responds and raises objectives and actions that respond to the diagnosis and previous strategic approaches made in the demarcation of Girona with regard to its food system.
From the Ramon Noguera Foundation we lead an action of the project called: Social and Ecological Food Workshop Onyar which has a double mission: on the one hand, the generation of employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities and, on the other another, the contribution to the development of a more environmentally sustainable food system. Thus, the operation consists of the promotion of a business line for the production and marketing of local organic food from the development of new food products and an innovative production model that prioritizes the application of environmental sustainability criteria. , while allowing to maintain and increase the jobs occupied by people with intellectual disabilities and give visibility to the social project behind it.
The main objectives have been set:
- Promote the business line of production and marketing of local organic food through the design and development of a reference production model, economically sustainable and with a high social impact
- Prioritize and apply environmental sustainability criteria to the production and distribution processes of new food products to be marketed
- Increase the real and perceived quality of new food products ensuring their traceability, food safety and ecological certification
- Guarantee the maintenance and creation of new jobs for the group of people with intellectual disabilities and respond to the social mission
- Encourage and promote responsible food consumption and raise awareness in this area.
